We like: “Industrial” styling could appeal to some. No complicated technology means less to go wrong. Good motor power and water capacity for the price.
Not so good: Not for those seeking the latest gadgets. Also not the best looking. Having to change from dry to wet cleaning could become tiresome (in fact most people just use the 6131T as a dedicated carpet cleaner).
Verdict: You cannot criticise the performance and durability on offer at this price. This is a perfect choice for those who just want an honest carpet cleaner at a good price.

The Vax 6131T is a no-nonsense carpet cleaner with a design that dates back to 1989 (with some changes made along the way). In fact this may be related to the very first carpet cleaner you owned – this is the successor to Vax’s first ever cleaner, made in 1977!
The key difference? This modern, updated Vax is actually a 3-in-1 cleaner that works as standard vacuum cleaner, a cleaner for accidental spills, and a full-blown carpet cleaner.
In terms of the Vax range, the 6131T sits firmly at the bottom (alongside the Rapide Deluxe) and usually retails at a decent price. It certainly represents a considerable saving when compared to the high-end £250+ models. Don’t expect much though in the way of “high end” features, though, but this should not put you off buying this impressive performer.
The Vax 6131T utilises a powerful 1300w electric motor which is greater suction power than the more expensive Vax Rapide Ultra 2/Rapid Ultra (1000w) models. There are no fancy rotating brushes on this machine as carpet cleaning is a manual job using a conventional style carpet cleaning head.
In fact the whole operation is different from the other carpet cleaner models reviewed – with the 6131T the user can place the motor unit in the centre of the room and clean the carpet using the lighter weight cleaning attachment rather than having to push a (sometimes quite heavy) upright cleaner around the room. In fact the Vax 6131T is one of the lightest carpet cleaners on test with an 8kg weight.
The Vax 6131T has a very impressive 8 litre dirty storage tank which is almost double that on offer in more expensive upright units. The clean water tank is a more typical 4 litres in capacity. In both cases though, trips to the sink will be kept to a minimum. The power cord is also the longest of any in our review guide at 10 metres; this is around 2 meters more than most other carpet cleaners and is useful for cleaning around a room without having to change plug sockets.
As with most other carpet cleaners, the 6131T comes complete with a number of cleaning tool attachments but at this price point you cannot expect (and will not get) powered hand tools.
All reviewers are extremely satisfied with the cleaning and drying performance of the Vax 6131T even though this carpet cleaner offers no advanced technology, like heated cleaning, relying solely on a powerful and solid motor.
- 2.5 m hose allows you to clean larger areas with no restrictions
- Includes additional on board tools to help you achieve a thorough clean
- 4 L clean and 8 L dirty capacity means less need to empty

I have actually purchased a couple of these Vaxes now. There are not the most stylish but they still do a great job. They are also easier to handle because you do not have to push the whole unit around like on the newer models.

One thing I don’t think you mentioned here is that the cleaner has a long hose so you can get to the those tricky places. It’s old fashioned but does the job.
