Hip, Hip, HEPA!
HEPA filters offer an extra level of filtration on vacuum cleaners. This is beneficial for those with allergies to pet hair or dust, or for individuals who simply like to be assured that their home is as clean as it can be.
HEPA filters are typically removable and washable. You will need to clean them periodically (as you should be doing with all vacuum cleaner filters anyway), but, on most vacuums, this is a fairly easy task.
When buying a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner, things to look for include:
- Are the filter cartridges easy to remove and wash?
- Are replacement cartridges available?
- If purchasing for a household with pets, is the vacuum cleaner otherwise suitable for pet hair?
- Is the vacuum cleaner powerful enough to thoroughly clean the whole house? (Consider the size of your property, and how often you typically need to clean)
- Is the vacuum cleaner light enough to be carried up and down stairs?
Who Benefits From HEPA Filter Vacuums?
The short answer is, anyone! Even if you don’t have allergies, the added filtration of a HEPA filter ensures your home is deep-down clean, giving you peace of mind.
As well as allergy sufferers, individuals who are immuno-compromised may find that the more thorough cleaning provided with a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner helps their health condition. Parents with young children may also appreciate the knowledge that even very small dust and dirt particles are being effectively and efficiently cleaned from carpets and floors, providing their children with a safe space to play and explore.
Top Five HEPA Filter Vacuum Cleaners – Reviews
#5:VonHaus 2-in-1 Stick and Upright Vacuum Cleaner
This is a lightweight, cheap HEPA filter vacuum cleaner that is designed more for caravans, etc than for household cleaning.
While it is certainly cheap enough to be purchased as a spare vacuum, or one for use on stairs, where it might be difficult to clean with a larger vacuum, it is neither particularly powerful nor durable. It offers the ability to switch between an upright stick vacuum, for floor-level cleaning, and a handheld vacuum, which is great for sofas and stairs.
This is a bagless vacuum cleaner. The dust container is fairly small, and, while easy to empty, will require frequent emptying and cleaning.

Pros:
- Dust container is easy to empty
- Lightweight
Cons:
- Poor suction
- Not very durable
- Difficult to remove filter cartridges
Value For Money?
While this is a very cheap vacuum cleaner, it’s a case of ‘you get what you pay for’, as it isn’t really durable enough for regular use.

#4: Livivo 2-in-1
Giving the option to switch between an upright vacuum and a handheld, this lightweight 800W HEPA filter vacuum cleaner is good for stairs and hard floors. It offers powerful suction, although the dust compartment is very small, and so will require frequent emptying.
Filter cartridges are washable, although it can be a little tricky to remove them.

Pros:
- Good suction
- Washable filter cartridges
- Good for stairs
Cons:
- Better suited to hard floors than carpet
- Small dust container
Value For Money?
If you live in a small flat with laminate flooring, this could be a good, cheap vacuum cleaner. Otherwise, it’s best suited to being a back up vacuum, or one just for the stairs.

#3: Vytronix VTBC01 1400W
This is a reasonably priced HEPA filter vacuum that packs a lot of punch for its small size. It’s bagless, and the dust compartment isn’t so tiny you’re emptying it partway through your cleaning. However, the filters do need changing more frequently than is usually the case, and this can be a little on the fiddly side.

Pros:
- Small yet powerful
- Reasonable sized dust compartment
Cons:
- Filters need changing frequently
Value For Money?
A good, affordable vacuum cleaner that’s let down by the frequent cartridge change requirements.

#2: Duronic VC8/BK 2-in-1
This is a lightweight, bagless vacuum cleaner with HEPA filtration. It is primarily designed to handle hard floors and stairs, and will lose suction quite quickly on thick carpet. It doesn’t pick up pet hair well at all.
However, it is a very affordable vacuum cleaner, which would be ideal for someone living without pets in a small apartment, or to keep in a caravan for use while on holiday.
Cartridges are washable and replaceable.

Pros:
- Lightweight
- Affordable
Cons:
- Not good on thick carpets
- Won’t pick up pet hair
Value For Money?
As long as you know what you’re buying, and aren’t expecting miracles, this is an okay vacuum cleaner. It would be ideal to take in a caravan, or for teenagers to keep in their room to try and encourage them to do a bit of the housework!

#1: Best HEPA Filter Vacuum Cleaner: SEBO Automatic X1.1 Eco
A full size, slightly heavy, HEPA filter vacuum cleaner which is powerful and durable. It runs fairly quietly, and will last years, rather than the months many vacuums seem to make it through. It is awkward to use on stairs, however, and the hose could do with being slightly longer.
![SEBO Automatic X1.1 ECO Vacuum Cleaner - 1100 W [ Energy Class E ]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/31T1gnI+deL.jpg)
Pros:
- Powerful yet quiet
- Durable
Cons:
- Heavy
- Awkward to use on stairs
Value For Money?
This is an expensive vacuum cleaner, but can handle almost all of your vacuuming needs, particularly if you live in a property without stairs. If you do have stairs, you may want to purchase a cheap handheld HEPA filter vacuum cleaner in addition to the SEBO.
Also, the durability and longevity of the SEBO means it will end up paying for itself, in the long run. as you won’t need to keep replacing it every few months.
