As you have guessed from the title, today we’re talking about vinyl. You might have tossed out all your old Abba albums when you got your first iPod, but we mean the other vinyl – the one that goes on your floor.
The appearance of natural hardwood and water-smoothed stones on your floors courtesy of vinyl plank flooring can be nothing short of spectacular. The main downside for British households when deciding to buy these floors are in the perceived difficulty of keeping them clean and maintaining their dazzling appearance.
We understand that many need guidance on how to clean vinyl plank flooring and this article will provide you with a number of uncomplicated, effective and affordable methods on how to go about it.
Now the simplest way is to buy one of the great steam mops we recommend. They’re pretty cheap, but the ideas here are almost free!
How To Clean Vinyl Plank Flooring
The 6 ways you can try are:
1. Doormats or Area Rugs
Dirt, dust, grit, and chemicals caught in your shoes can remove the finishing from the floors through degrading it or cause it a yellow discolouration. Therefore investing in a door mat or area rug and placing it in front of the doorway is not only an effortless cleaning method on your part but a beneficial one.
2. Sweeping, Dry Mopping or Vacuuming
Before wet cleaning use a soft broom, mop or vacuum to sweep away or suck loose dirt such as food particles, dust or hairs. Pay more attention to corners, under furniture, and along skirting boards. Note that when vacuuming, you shouldn’t use a ‘beater bar’ attachment as it will ruin the floor.
3. Pure Water and Sponge Mop
For mild and rushed cleaning water and a sponge mop is appropriate. Remember to clean frequently and mop spills immediately to avoid stains. (Seriously, though, get a steam mop! Bring yourself into the future.)
4. Apple Cider Vinegar
I don’t think I’ve ever known a more multi-purpose product than ACV, from healing properties to cleaning your floors. Vinegar has acidic properties that easily remove grime and stubborn dirt, saving you the trouble of soap accumulation. This is how to use ACV for cleaning:
- Dissolve one cup of ACV to about 4 to 5 litres of hot water
- Dip a mop, wring till damp
- Use it to clean and repeat.
- Thoroughly rinse off the mop when you’re done
This also helps in disinfecting.
5. Baking Soda/Sodium Bicarbonate
Mix water and baking powder into a fine paste and use the paste to scrub off any stains caused by say ketchup, juice, stews et cetera and finish off by rinsing the spot well.
6. Alcohol, Nail Polish Remover and Mineral Spirits
These can be used to remove stains from nail polish, lipstick, paints, dyes, inks, crayons and many more.
I hope you now have an idea on how to clean your vinyl plank flooring and for a final tip, if you’re moving or adding furniture use paneling or a sheet of plywood to hinder tears or scuff marks to the floor.
