Here’s our review of the latest carpet cleaner from Bissell. If you don’t want to read the whole thing – trust us, it’s a winner!
The Promise
- (Excellent) 5-year parts and labour guarantee.
- The company claims that the Hydrowave will leave your carpet dry within 30 minutes. Mind-blowingly fast! But there’s a catch – that’s with the Light Clean mode. The superb Deep Clean mode will obviously take much longer.
- It comes with 2 LED lights to help you see stains in nooks and crannies. Welcome to the future!
- Multiple rows of extra-large brushes promise great results in Deep Clean mode.
But does it work? Read on!

Unboxing and Assembly
Assembly is as easy as clicking the handle into place. (Keep the buttons to the front.)
It comes with a special tool for cleaning gunk out of the front of the machine. Perfect for those stubborn pet hairs that get twisted up in there.
Our box came with 750ml of Bissell’s Wash and Protect cleaning solution.
Uno, Dos, Trays
My favourite discovery was a clever and handy bit of design. At first it’s a simple plastic tray that you can store the washer on – it has a built in slot for the cleaning tool so you don’t lose it. That’s a great idea. It’s like those phones that have a slot for their little stylus pen.
This tray also helps you clean the Hydrowave. Put a little bit of clean water where indicated by the MAX text, then place the machine there and turn it on. It will suck up the water and that will help keep everything inside clean.
The tray has space to store two rollers. You only get one in this box, but in theory you may be able to acquire a soft roller that allows you to use the Hydrowave on hard floors.
Compact and Light
This model isn’t as large as some others. That has the benefit of making it lightweight – it weighs in at only XXX. But it does mean you’ll be emptying the tank and refilling the water more frequently. Still, the lower weight will be a boon for many customers. The centre of gravity seems quite high – it will take a bit of getting used to compared to your vacuum.
It stores in two modes. The first is obviously in its upright, fully-extended use mode. Or you can press a button to shorten the handle. Decide which one before wrapping the power cord around it!
Use
The Hydrowave is fairly narrow so you’ll be doing more laps of your carpet than with a fatter model.
If the transparent plastic front gets dirty you can click it off the main body and give it a quick wash, or remove debris with the handy cleaning tool. It’s also trivially easy to remove the brush head. It doesn’t delay your cleaning session by more than a minute.
It’s quiet compared to most rival carpet cleaners.
If you have a particularly stubborn stain you can use Bissell’s CleanShot technology. This blasts a jet of detergent onto a particular spot. Simply press the ‘spray’ button on the handle to activate it.
Cleaning Power
It is EXTREMELY effective! It really gets rid of a lot of dirt. Just use it for 5 minutes then take a look at the dirty water tank. It will make you wonder where all the dirt came from! (Or maybe you have kids and pets and know exactly where it came from…)
Summary
Impressive for small homes, stairs, or occasional jobs, but not the best choice for larger rooms or more regular use.
- Cleans deep into carpet fibres, removing what vacuums leave behind
- Motorized XL brush roll with 10 rows of DirtLifter power brushes
- Clean Shot pre-treat to tackle extra tough stains
